What is so interesting here is that the article says , "Coke made an emergency recipe change in March to remove an ingredient known as 4-methylimidazole (4-MI or 4-MEI) that would have required a cancer warning labeling to be slapped onto the soft drink." Coke has always known that aspartame causes cancer.
On August 1, 1985 FDA toxicologist, Dr. Adrian Gross, told Congress that at least one of Searle's studies "has established beyond ANY REASONABLE DOUBT that aspartame is capable of inducing brain tumors in experimental animals and that this predisposition of it is of extremely high significance. ... In view of these indications that the cancer causing potential of aspartame is a matter that had been established WAY BEYOND ANY REASONABLE DOUBT, one can ask: What is the reason for the apparent refusal by the FDA to invoke for this food additive the so-called Delaney Amendment to the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act?"
The Delaney Amendment makes it illegal to allow ANY residue of cancer causing chemicals in foods. Dr Gross concluded by asking, "Given the cancer causing potential of aspartame how would the FDA justify its position that it views a certain amount of aspartame as constituting an allowable daily intake or 'safe' level of it? Is that position in effect not equivalent to setting a 'tolerance' for this food additive and thus a violation of that law? And if the FDA itself elects to violate the law, who is left to protect the health of the public?" Congressional Record SID835:131 (8/1/85)

As to addiction, the free methyl alcohol is classified as a narcotic, It causes chronic methanol toxicity. This affects the dopamine system of the brain and causes addiction. Many years ago here in Atlanta, Mission Possible activists poured out Diet Coke in front of the media. Coke refused to be present or debate the issue on aspartame, but no one could miss the Coke Vehicle, and a man with binoculars.
Coke bragged about the Diet Coke Hunk, Lucky Vanous, and to get his autograph all you needed to do was buy a Diet Coke. When he was in Atlanta, he was thrown a package containing the protest of the National Soft Drink Assn and other records, and a letter telling him how dangerous Diet Coke is for children. Coke employees were holding warning flyers on aspartame distributed by MP activists. Fifty eight days later Vanous was no longer with Coke as discussed on "Hard Copy."
One thing Coke can never do is say they didn't know. Studies have shown aspartame causes cancer. Three studies by Dr. Morando Soffritti of the Ramazzini Institute prove aspartame to be a multipotential carcinogen. A recent study shows diet soda causes heart attacks and strokes. Only controlled or financed by the manufacturers research ever said it was safe. Furthermore, the FDA tried to have G. D. Searle indicted for fraud. They were trying to show safety and couldn't. So only independent, unbiased peer reviewed studies can be used.

Proposition 65 in California says any product containing methanol or formaldehyde must have a cancer warning to enter the state of California. Why is it not enforced? The Trocho Study in Barcelona by Dr. Maria Alemany showed the formaldehyde converted from the free methyl alcohol embalms living tissue and damages DNA. A new book by Dr. Woodrow Monte, "When Science Sleeps" addresses the issue of the free methyl alcohol in aspartame.

A woman from New Zealand who reportedly drank as much as 2.6 gallons of Coca-Cola per day to fuel her ‘Coke addiction’ has died, and experts are saying that her serious craving for pop was a major contributor. The news could not come at a worse time for Coca-Cola, who has already been hit by both government bodies and consumers alike for their cancer-linked beverage. In fact, the Coca-Cola company made an emergency recipe change in March to remove an ingredient known as 4-methylimidazole (4-MI or 4-MEI) that would have required a cancer warning labeling to be slapped onto the soft drink.
As it was recently removed to avoid the label, this means that Natasha Harris’ Coca-Cola excessive consumption was accompanied by the carcinogenic ingredient. In addition to 4-methylimidazole, Harris also consumed gallons and gallons of a liquid containing aspartame, high-fructose corn syrup, and 40 grams of sugar per can. When you perform some simple math, you can see that Harris actually consumed around 41 and one half 8-ounce cans of Coca-Cola on her heaviest binge drinking days. Further equations show that, at 39 grams per 8-ounce can, Harris was taking in around 1,618 grams of sugar per day. To put that into perspective, that’s 1,598 grams more than the recommended daily limit.
According to expert Dr. Dan Mornin, Harris probably suffered from hypokalemia, or low potassium. Mornin says that this was most likely a result of her excessive Coke consumption, which severely affected her bones. To answer the question as to how anyone could possibly consume such copious amounts of soda despite the serious health risks, it’s important to examine the research regarding sugar addiction. Not only has sugar addiction been labeled as the ‘new alcoholism‘ by health professionals, but a growing body of research also has found that it is actually as addictive as cocaine.
Another health professional expressed concerns over the consumption of Coca-Cola and other sugary beverages, stating:
- “it is certainly well demonstrated that excessive long or short term cola ingestion can be dramatically symptomatic, and there are strong hypothetical grounds for this becoming fatal in individual cases.”
